其实，端午节的主要习俗是赛龙舟。关于龙舟的竞渡，文字的记载始于公元五百年前梁代吴均的的《续齐谐记》。较后，许多的记载中都可以找到有关赛龙舟的文字记载。现存中国各地的数千种方志中，共有227种方志有龙舟竞渡的记载。
端午划龙舟，龙舟竞渡的说法，包括有“大众舟齐出发，赶往丞救屈原。”及“一呐喊鼓乐吓退蛟龙。”。这些都让人联想到屈原。
每年的端午，在中国大江南北以及南洋一带的华族，都还会举办龙舟竞渡，提倡端午龙舟赛。
战国时代，楚秦争夺霸权，诗人屈原很受楚王器重，然而屈原的主张遭到上官大夫靳尚为首的守旧派的反对，不断在楚怀王的面前诋毁屈原，楚怀王渐渐疏远了屈原，有着远大抱负的屈原倍感痛心，他怀着难以抑制的忧郁悲愤，写出了《离骚》、《天向》等不朽诗篇。
公无前229年，秦国攻占了楚国八座城池，接着又派使臣请楚怀王去秦国议和。屈原看破了秦王的阴谋，冒死进宫陈述利害，楚怀王不但不听，反而将屈原逐出郢都。楚怀王如期赴会，一到秦国就被囚禁起来，楚怀王悔恨交加，忧郁成疾，三年后客死于秦国。楚顷衰王即位不久，秦王又派兵攻打楚国，顷衰王仓惶撤离京城，秦兵攻占郢城。屈原在流放途中，接连听到楚怀王客死和郢城攻破的噩耗后，万念俱灰，仰天长叹一声，投入了滚滚激流的汩罗江。
江上的渔夫和岸上的百姓，听说屈原大夫投江自尽，都纷纷来到江上，奋力打捞屈原的尸体，纷纷拿来了粽子、鸡蛋投入江中，有此郎中还把雄黄酒倒入汪中，以便药昏蛟龙水兽，使屈原大夫尸体免遭伤害。
从此，每年五月初–屈原投江殉难日，楚国人民都到江上划龙舟，投粽子，以此来纪念伟大的爱国诗人，端午节的风俗就这样流传下来。

屈原是春秋时期的楚国人，是楚怀王身边的一位大臣，一直提倡强国富民，抗击秦国，可不料被奸臣陷害，流放他乡，公元前278年，楚国京城被攻破，屈原深感到绝望，便在自己的脚上捆几块石头，跳汩罗江自杀，当地的居民知道后，纷纷的坐船到汩罗江去捞屈原的尸体，有的人为了让小鱼小虾不吃屈原的异体，就在江里投入一些米团，告诉小鱼小虾吃米团，别吃屈原。
后来，有的人用叶子包米团，以此纪念屈原，有的地方还组织龙舟比赛，诗词比赛。这个传统习俗一直延续到今天。渐渐的，演变成现在的粽子，家家户户都是团圆在一起吃粽子，而现在粽子的口味也有很多，有的里面放了肉，有的放了盐，还有的放了白糖。
这就是端午节的来历。
